The Preface to the Second Edition of the Big Book explains that revisions to the personal history section of the book were made in order “to represent the current membership of Alcoholics Anonymous more accurately, and thereby to reach more Alcoholics.” In that spirit, the 2021 General Service Conference recommended that “a Fifth Edition of the Big Book, Alcoholics Anonymous, be developed, including an update of stories to better reflect the current membership, keeping in mind the 1995 Advisory Action: The General Service Office of Alcoholics Anonymous is asking for stories to be considered for inclusion in the 5th Edition of the English-language and the 4th Edition of the Spanish-language Big Book.
